Car Rental in Croatia — By Car to Zrce Beach
Why a Rental Car for the Zrce Trip?
A rental car in Croatia gives you maximum freedom. You are independent of bus transfers, can spontaneously explore the surroundings, and always have the option to drive back peacefully after a long party night — or make a detour to secluded bays the next day. Especially for groups, a rental car can also be financially worthwhile.
Where to Book? Zadar or Split Airport
Most Zrce visitors land at Zadar Airport (about 1.5 hours drive to Novalja) or Split Airport (about 3.5 hours). Right at the airport, you will find the counters of all major providers — Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise, and local rental companies. Our tips:
- Book online in advance: Significantly cheaper than on-site, especially in high season
- Choose full insurance without deductible — saves nerves with small scratches
- Use comparison portals like Check24 or billiger-mietwagen.de
- Credit card is mandatory for the deposit (debit cards often not accepted)
Costs: How Much Does a Rental Car Cost?
In the high season (July/August), you should expect 30 to 50 Euros per day for a small car. Early bookers often pay only 20-30 Euros. For a group of 4-5 people, a mid-range car is worthwhile — the costs per person drop drastically. Watch out for hidden fees like one-way rental (if you drop off at a different location) or young driver surcharges under 25 years.
Tolls and the Pag Bridge
Croatia has a highway toll system. The main routes (e.g., A1 Zagreb–Split) are toll roads. You can pay in cash in Kuna/Euro or by credit card at the toll stations. Since 2024, there is also an electronic vignette (ENC) that you can buy online — practical if you drive a lot.
Good news: The Pag Bridge (Paški most), which connects the mainland with Pag Island, has been toll-free since 2022. So you can cross the bridge for free directly to Novalja and Zrce Beach.
Drive to Novalja and Parking
From Zadar, you drive via the A1 towards Posedarje, then over the Pag Bridge and the coastal road to Novalja. The route is scenically beautiful — barren moon landscape on Pag, turquoise sea on the left and right. In Novalja, there are several parking options:
- Free parking a bit outside the center
- Paid parking zones in the center (about 1-2 €/hour in summer)
- Shuttle service to Zrce Beach — the car stays safe in Novalja
Tip: Do not drive the rental car directly to Zrce Beach. The parking spaces there are limited and expensive. Use the shuttle.
Croatian Traffic Rules
A few important rules for driving in Croatia:
- Speed limit: 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h outside urban areas, 130 km/h on highways
- Lights on: Low beam must be on even during the day
- Blood alcohol limit: 0.5 ‰ (under 25 years: 0.0 ‰!)
- Warning vest and warning triangle are mandatory in the vehicle
- Gas prices: Currently about 1.45-1.55 €/liter for Super 95
Freedom on Four Wheels
With a rental car, your Zrce trip becomes an adventure. Besides the party program, you can explore the surroundings of Novalja — hidden beaches, the Velebit mountains, or picturesque coastal towns like Rab.
