The Story of Zrce Beach — From Fishing Village to Festival Mecca
A Beach with History: The Beginnings of Zrce
Today, when one thinks of Zrce Beach, images of mega-festivals, international DJs, and thousands of partying people come to mind. But it wasn't always like this. Even in the 1970s, the bay near Novalja on the island of Pag was a quiet, almost forgotten place — a pebble beach where fishermen mended their nets and locals bathed in the crystal-clear water.
The region thrived on tourism, but it was the classic Adriatic vacation: families, sunbathing, and cozy konobas. There was no talk of parties here. Novalja itself was a charming small town known primarily for its Roman aqueducts — not for basslines.
The 1980s: The Spark that Changed Everything
In 1987, the Club Kalypso opened at Zrce Beach — and thus began a new era. What started as a simple beach bar with a sound system quickly developed into a magnet for young Croats and Slovenians who were thirsty for freedom and partying after the end of communism.
In the 1990s — in the midst of the Croatian War — the island of Pag was largely spared from combat. The Zrce Festival Beach became a refuge for a generation that wanted to celebrate life despite everything. The scene grew slowly but steadily.
The 2000s: International Attention
With Croatia's EU accession and the increasing popularity of budget flights, the popularity of Zrce exploded. New clubs opened: Aquarius, Papaya, and later NOA Beach Club. International festivals like Hideout, Fresh Island, and Sonus attracted tens of thousands of visitors from all over Europe.
DJ Mag included the clubs at Zrce Festival Beach in its famous Top 100 list — a knightly accolade for the Croatian club scene. Suddenly, Zrce stood on par with Ibiza and Mykonos.
- Papaya Club — at times among the top 20 worldwide
- NOA Beach Club — known for its spectacular location right by the sea
- Aquarius — an institution since the early 2000s
- Kalypso — the forefather of all Zrce clubs
2025/26: A New Chapter Begins
The recent history of Zrce Beach is marked by upheavals. The demolition of some historical club structures at the end of 2025 marks the end of an era — but also the beginning of something new. The operators plan modern, more sustainable buildings that are intended to keep the beach fit for the coming decades.
Despite all the changes, the core remains: Zrce is and will remain the place where music, sea, and community come together. The festivals continue, the beats do not stop — and the next generation of partygoers is already waiting in the wings.
